In 2002 with the intention of having more space and a quiet place to relax at the end of the day, we moved to greener pastures in the country. A local advertisement for a seminar to “learn about the world’s finest livestock investment” lured us out of our tranquil lifestyle. We attended the seminar and fell in love with alpacas at first sight! The cute animals were fascinating as they gazed back at us with curiosity, so we decided to find out as much as we could about them. The next 18 months involved internet research, ordering a subscription to “Alpaca Magazine,” visiting every nearby farm and attending alpaca shows to understand fleece characteristics and more about the AOBA organization. We soon discovered that every alpaca owner we met shared a similar story.
For our alpaca investment we selected alpacas with the elite characteristics that we knew would always be important to the future of the alpaca fiber industry – fiber fineness, density and correct conformation. Three females were purchased, bred, and boarded until the barn, adequate fencing, and pastures were complete and our first alpacas and their crias came “home” in 2005.
Staying well-educated in the welfare and ownership of alpacas has been of utmost importance to us as our herd continues to grow. Our original selection of alpacas gave us confidence in the alpaca business as our herd produces highly marketable fiber, gentle breeding stock, and healthy, friendly crias.
